Courtnee, the host of Handmaiden Live, is a vibrant Christian woman whose show discusses the taboo truths of the modern Christian as we speak to God’s elected outcasts about the culture here in the USA, the struggles, and the desperate need for transparent, honest, emotional authenticity in our pews. So often Christians and the Church are the ones involved in porn or adultery, and no one will talk about it or even acknowledge it--and if you do, then often you are the one who ends up ostracized or worse! Handmaiden Live is specifically to bring those topics to the LIGHT and show people there is a way to recover.

During the show tomorrow, we will be discussing the transparent truths of keeping your marriage affair free and how you can find hope and rebuild if your marriage has experienced infid elity. YourTango Final Word "Experts Agree: Cheating Is Not About Sex"

YourTango recently asked some of the top love experts to give the final word on the most-asked relationship and dating questions. This episode of "The Final Word," was so good, we just HAD to share it!  They asked Ian Kerner, Evan Marc Katz, Debra Burrell and Andrea Syrtash why people are unfaithful. Surprisingly, it often has nothing to do with sex. Among the reasons why people cheat? Emotional connection, excitement and—as counterintuitive as it may seem—an attempt to preserve a floundering relationship. Why Do Newlyweds Cheat?
Do you disagree with these love experts? Comment below. Do you have another type of relationship conundrum that needs to be solved? Head on over to Ask YourTango. Are you looking to hire a marriage coach? Check out Affaircare to find a professional who can help you.

Computer Crashes and Marital Health

Yesterday my computer had a crash.  Like most bloggers and online entrepreneurs, my life is on my computer.  Prior to the crash I had noticed the graphics were acting up, but thought it was a mix of needing to update the drivers and possibly to vacuum some dust around the PC and inside the box.  Apparently I was wrong--and my video card fan was not working and the card was overheating.  Over time, as the fan would slow and the card would overheat...it was gradually corrupting my Windows.

Until recently I was working with a company that required older versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, because their software didn't work with the latest releases.  Usually this is pretty bad for your PC because over time the Firefox or Internet Explorer are no longer supported browsers and things like videos and images no longer run properly.  Still it was for a paycheck, and I added Google Chrome for a cool, updated, personal browser and used old versions of IE and Firefox for work.  The trick though was that there were also certain Windows updates that I couldn't run or it would make the work software incompatible.  So over time Windows, IE and Firefox were getting older and older and less and less supported...and that's bad.  I think mixing the old, unsupported Windows with the video card overheating...and my version of XP got to a point where it was corrupted to the point that it would no longer run.

I woke up like I do every day and was checking my email and starting to respond when my PC shut down (aka, turned off) for no apparent reason.  Hey, I hit the button on the front of the PC now and then--I'm not fool proof!  But I was pretty sure I hadn't been moving and neither had Dear Hubby, yet it just shut down!  Anyway, I tried to restart it and that's when it all began.  It wouldn't boot.  We could get it to boot into Safe Mode but as we tried different diagnostic things, eventually even that stopped and we couldn't even get it to boot in Safe Mode.  It was clear my Windows was toast and I was going to have to reformat my drive and reinstall Windows.

What does all this have to do with Marital Health, you wonder, right?  Well I *HATE* having to reformat my drive and reinstalling Windows.  It feels like I'm losing all my data and all my programs, and it completely wastes an entire day!  I could have chosen to play the victim, whine and moan, blame my Dear Hubby somehow, and yell angrily--snarling at everyone who dared to cross my path yesterday.  I actually know people who would have chosen to act exactly like that!  It was very stressful; I was worried; Dear Hubby was worried; and the way I make a living was at stake!  Instead, I made a decision--that is to say a conscious choice--to accept that this was occurring and look at it as an opportunity rather than a torment.  Psalm 118:24 says "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

There was NO PART OF ME that wanted to rejoice and be glad that I had to reformat my drive and reinstall Windows!  But I made a decision to do it anyway, even though I did not "feel like it," and guess what happened?  Dear Hubby and I had a day that brought us CLOSER rather than driving us apart!

My Dear Hubby is a graphics professional so he has a PC that is top of the line, large and fast.  He has the latest and greatest of everything!  So we could have copied my entire drive onto his extra "storage" drive if we had to, so I was at least pretty sure I wasn't going to lose any documents.  Thank God for that!  So right there I thought, "Well I can rejoice over not losing data" and I did.  Then we had a good chance to start my drive over with a nice, new install of Windows, so that was a little something I could rejoice over.

Most of my clients prefer Windows XP (some work with Windows 7, but none work with Vista), so we chose to reinstall our XP-Pro license and register it and authenticate it and everything...and then run every update!  Oh that took a moment and yet it runs so smooth and clean now!  Then Dear Hubby helped me configure the new install the way I prefer (like getting the right size screen, icons, and fonts).  Oh there was another thing I could rejoice over: Dear Hubby was being AMAZINGLY helpful!  I was somewhat emotional, but he was calm and patient and steady so that really helped...and I did rejoice over that!

Then the real fun began: downloading programs and games and all the patches.  We knew that would take most of the day, and guess what Dear Hubby did?  He had made plans to make a fancy dinner (homemade clam chowder, which, trust me, is *out of this world* good) but he put aside his own plans to help me with downloads and finding sites or disks so I could reinstall all my programs and games!  Okay I DEFINITELY rejoiced in that!  Also, he helped me remember the programs I used all the time, helped find sites to download (like the Mozilla site), and helped me find the right location for all  the bookmarks he'd saved!

Every day--every event is an opportunity to bring you and your spouse closer, or drive the two of you further apart. Every day you can CHOOSE to be happy or choose to complain and blame others.  Every day, you make the choice to damage your marriage or make it stronger and more healthy.  Reformatting my drive and reinstalling Windows was a dramatic demonstration of the concept that happiness happens, and we can choose to make our marriage healthy!

Add Happiness Every Day of the Month

Today is the final say of Happiness Happens month.  All this month, August we've been celebrating with the Society of Happy People learning about happiness and how to be more happy.  Happiness does not happen to us, and others don't make us happy--we choose to be happy.  According to the Society of Happy People, there are thirty-one types of happiness, easily one for each day of any month!  So this month...and next month...choose to be happy where you are.  For your happiness here are the 31 Types of Happiness and a little something for each day!

1.  Amazed--Choose to do something today that you find amazing or choose to be amazing!  Blind her with science--or wear that new red dress to his office.
2.  Amused--What amuses you?  Three Stooges?  George and Gracie?  Puppy kisses?  Your kids' funny sayings?  Rolling down a hill?  DO what makes you giggle.
3.  Anticipation--Part of the fun of some things is that you anticipate how fun it will be to see their face, or taste that sweet taste.  Bring happiness to your day by anticipating the joy!
4.  Borrowed--Not all happiness is yours; sometimes the happiness is someone else's joy that just bring happiness to you: the birth of a new baby, a wedding, winning 1st place at the fair...  Borrow happiness.
5.  Celebrate--Not every day is your birthday or anniversary, but each day does bring you something to celebrate, so increase your happiness today by celebrating!
6.  Cheerful--Do you choose to focus on the negative or will you make the decision to be cheerful?  In fact, why not bring some cheer to others!  Tell a joke.  Do something silly.  Or just smile.  :D
7.  Compassion--Sometimes our lack of happiness is that we are so focused on ourselves we forget others.  So bring happiness to your life by showing compassion for another human or animal friend.
8.  Contentt-- "I...have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  ...I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation." --Phil. 4:11&12
9.  Delight--Some things are just delightful, like the laughter of a child.
10.  Enthusiastic--The energy behind enthusiasm is contagious, so if you need a boost of happiness, do something about which you are enthusiastic!
11.  Exuberant--An exuberant personality overflows with joy like a water fountain overflowing with water.  Let the joy inside you bubble up and bless others.
12.  Fun--Yes there are bills to pay and schedules to be met, but today, put that all down and go swing in the park and roll down the hill.  Do something that's just plain FUN!
13.  Give--Sometimes life feels negative because we become so focused on "what's in it for me?"  To increase your happiness...give some away!  Give of yourself and your time, and give selflessly.
14.  Glad--Today, be with people who make you glad or so one thing that just brings that little smile to your face.  Tap your toe.  Read a little or write in your journal.  Invite someone over for coffee.
15.  Grateful--What are the things in your life that you're grateful for?  Write a list in your journal and to bring a little happiness shot in the arm, read you Grateful List.  Not Grateful DEAD, Grateful LIST.
16.  Hopeful--Things may not be great right now but what do you hope for?  Do you have hopes and dreams?  What do you hope for in your marriage and family?  In your job and home?
17.  Humor--Knock, knock.  Who's there?  The Three Stooges.  Will Farrel.  Venture Brothers.  Monty Python.  Humor can come in many shapes and sizes, but today take time to laugh until you fall off your chair and roll on the floor laughing!
18.  Inspiration--Not all happiness is giddy bubbliness.  Sometimes it's being inspired by a good quote or a bible verse!
19.  Joy--According to Merriam-Webster it's the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.  Find your joy!
20.  Love--Love is an choice to act in a loving way, but nothing can bring happiness like loving someone.  So love your spouse, your children, your dog or your cat.  Spread the love!
21.  Nostalgia--Happiness gets a shot in the arm when you "remember when..."  Remember those Christmases as a kid?  Your bestest bestest friend?  That first date?  The birth of your first child?  See that smile on your face?  Take a little time to be nostalgic today.
22.  Optimistic--Some people have naturally optimistic personalities, but if you are not someone blessed with that trait, today is your day to practice looking at your glass as half full.
23.  Peace--Life is a constant stream of drama and stress threatening to play havok with your happiness, so to be happier, remember to take time to be peaceful.
24.  Play--Remember squit guns and merry-go-rounds and swinging so high you thought you'd flip over?  Why don't we do that anymore?
25.  Relief--We all carry lists of things "to do" and it's like a burden weighing down our happiness.  Release one thing from your list today and let the relief of letting it go make you happy!
26.  Satisfaction--A person feels self-satisfaction when they do a job well-done, when they do the right thing (even if it was a tough situation) or when they are centered within.  So strive for satisfaction today and feel that boost in your happiness.
27.  Spirituality--"...the deepest values and meanings by which people live."  Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life. So take time out today to pray, meditate or attend a worship service.
28.  Spontaneous--Don't plan.  Don't schedule.  Just go on the spur of the moment, be crazy, and have fun.  Be Happy.
29.  Surprise--Be sneaky, be devious, and plan a big surprise for your spouse or your friend...enjoy their joy and the surprise on their face!
30.  Sweet--Some days it's appropriate to stand up for yourself and enforce boundaries...and other days it's appropriate to be the sweet, loving person you are inside.  Choose to be sweet today--and for fun share something sweet (like go out for a piece of pie)!
31.  Vivacious--A person can sit quietly reading and be very happy, but today be someone who bubbles forth with life and vitality.  Increase your happiness by breaking out of the "routine" and being full of life!

HAPPINESS HAPPENS

This month The Secret Society of Happy People  is celebrating the 11th Annual Happiness Happens Month (August).  To join our Happiness Happens celebration all this month, come to the Affaircare page  to sign up for our daily, happiness newsletter--or go to the Affaircare Facebook page or become a friend of Affaircare on Twitter!  Learn how to be happy and how to have a happy marriage. All this month, we are going to be discussing and learning about happiness.

According to Merriam-Webster, happiness is defined as: a state of well-being and contentment, joy; a pleasurable or satisfying experience.  Happiness is also associated with love, satisfaction, cheerfulness, and hope.  Research has identified a number of attributes that correlate with happiness: relationships and social interaction, extraversion, marital status, employment, health, democratic freedom, optimism, endorphins released through physical exercise and eating chocolate, religious involvement, income and proximity to other happy people.  For centuries people have pondered what happiness is and tried to identify it's sources.  We do know that many biological, religious and psychological theories have been put forth to try to explain "how to get happiness."

Is there a biological component associated with happiness? Studies have shown that high concentrations of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine leads to feelings of elation and euphoria.  But some scientist describe "happiness" as nothing more than a biological state brought about by the release and blocked reabsorption of certain neurotransmitters (primarily norepinephrine, dopamine, and sertonian) triggered by physical and cognitive activities.

Philosophers and religious thinkers often define happiness in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion. Augustine accepted the basic tenet of the ancients' ethical theory: we should aim our behavior toward the achievement of well-being or happiness, the only universal desire. Aquinas concurred with Aristotle and Augustine: happiness is the basic human pursuit. He also agreed that happiness had to do with intelligent reflection. The highest form of happiness derives from the highest use of the intellect: thinking about spiritual matters and in particular about God.

For many years, the field of psychology concentrated on mental illness. Since Martin Seligman's landmark book, Authentic Happiness, a new and exciting branch of psychology called Positive Psychology is focusing on the good life, happiness, and well-being--what it is and how we can pursue the good life with greater success.  While direct measurement of happiness presents challenges, tools such as The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire have been developed by researchers. Positive psychology researchers use theoretical models that include describing happiness as consisting of positive emotions and positive activities, or that describe three kinds of happiness: pleasure, engagement, and meaning.

So join our Happiness Happens celebration all this month.  Over the next weeks, we will focus what happiness IS, how you can be happier, and how to have a happier marriage!

I promise to love you...as long as I'm happy

My grandparents were married for more than 50 years--both sets.  Their parents before them also married young and were together until parted by death.  And those grandparents and great-grandparents lived through emigrating to a new world, two World Wars and the Great Depression, so life was not "easy" for them.  Why is it that those generations "before" survived with their marriages in tact, and current generations have a better than 50% chance of divorce...and are likely to do it over and over again?

The answer to this nagging question is one word: COMMITMENT.

When my grandparents and their parents uttered their wedding vows, it was in a society that understood the idea that a man was only as good as his word--and that a commitment meant responsibility and obligation.  When they married, it wasn't due to butterflies in the stomach infatuation that they expected would continue for their whole life.  Those were generations that understood that a marriage vow was entering into a voluntary contract with another person for life to form a stable family unit and beyond.  They understood that they were not always going to be "happy" and that sometimes happiness comes from being patient and waiting.

Somewhere in the 60's and 70's the shift changed from honoring "family and commitment" to honoring only what brings up pleasure right now.  In an article addressing this concept, I love you...for right now, the author Lady Grier talks about how the strong lifelong commitments of past generations has been replaced by an attitude of "oh well, I'm tired of him/her."  Everywhere I look, people are being advised to leave their marriages and divorce "because after all you deserve to be happy"  ... and apparently you have to be happy right now!! In addition, she notes that men today don't know what it means to really provide for a family or be the head of the household; and likewise women today expect men to be emasculated metrosexuals and "submit" is a fighting word!  Civil marriage vows still say: "I, ____, take you, ____, for my lawful (husband/wife), to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health and, forsaking all others, be faithful to you until death us do part" and yet to be completely honest, they probably should say: "I, ___, take you, ___, for my lawful (husband/wife), to have and to hold as long as I feel like it, from this day for better, for richer, in health and as long as the sex is good.  If I am unhappy or it becomes for worse, for poorer, in sickness or someone comes along who flirts more or who makes me happier, I can't really promise I'll be faithful."

Marriage vows mean more than a party and a great dress.  Marriage vows are effectively a business contract between the three individuals: the husband, the wife, and God.  When you make a vow you are voluntarily telling your spouse in front of God what you are promising: that you will dedicate 100% of your affection and loyalty to them and them only as long as you are alive.  In exchange for that promise, you have a companion on all that life sends you--the good and the bad. Unfortunately you can not get the benefits of honoring that vow without also accepting the responsibilities of honoring that vow.  For our instant gratification generation, that means that it will not always be easy...and you'll stay because you decide to stay.  That means you will not always "be happy" but that if you want to have a happy relationship you can create it...not leave.  That means that when it gets tough, you made a promise and you are a man (or woman) of your word and you stick it out. But even beyond honoring our promises and once again become people who value our word, we need to put our focus on God:

Heb. 12:1-4
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. (NIV)

These verses tell us not to focus on ourselves, our neighbors, other couples or even others in the Church--we are to focus on the love that Christ showed us and demonstrate THAT level of love and commitment to our spouse.
